== 2009 settlement for off-label uses promotions == On September 2, 2009, the United States Department of Justice fined Pfizer $2.3 billion after one of its subsidiaries, Pharmacia & Upjohn Company, pleaded guilty to marketing four drugs, including Bextra, "with the intent to defraud or mislead." Pharmacia & Upjohn admitted to criminal conduct in the promotion of Bextra, and agreed to pay the largest criminal fine ever imposed in the United States for any matter, $1.195 billion. A former Pfizer district sales manager was indicted and sentenced to home confinement for destroying documents regarding the illegal promotion of Bextra. In addition, a regional manager pleaded guilty to distribution of a misbranded product, and was fined $75,000 and 24 months on probation. The remaining $1 billion of the fine were paid to resolve allegations under the civil False Claims Act case and is the largest civil fraud settlement against a pharmaceutical company. Six whistleblowers were awarded more than $102 million for their role in the investigation. Former Pfizer sales representative John Kopchinski acted as a qui tam relator and filed a complaint in 2004 outlining the illegal conduct in the marketing of Bextra. Kopchinski was awarded $51.5 million for his role in the case because the improper marketing of Bextra was the largest piece of the settlement at $1.8 billion.

In terms of the mechanism of action of benzodiazepines, their similarities are too great to separate them into individual categories such as anxiolytic or hypnotic. For example, a hypnotic administered in low doses produces anxiety-relieving effects, whereas a benzodiazepine marketed as an anti-anxiety drug at higher doses induces sleep. The subset of GABAA receptors that also bind benzodiazepines are referred to as benzodiazepine receptors (BzR). The GABAA receptor is a heteromer composed of five subunits, the most common ones being two αs, two βs, and one γ (α2β2γ1). For each subunit, many subtypes exist (α1–6, β1–3, and γ1–3). GABAA receptors that are made up of different combinations of subunit subtypes have different properties, different distributions in the brain, and different activities relative to pharmacological and clinical effects. Benzodiazepines bind at the interface of the α and γ subunits on the GABAA receptor. Binding also requires that alpha subunits contain a histidine amino acid residue, (i.e., α1, α2, α3, and α5 containing GABAA receptors). For this reason, benzodiazepines show no affinity for GABAA receptors containing α4 and α6 subunits with an arginine instead of a histidine residue. Once bound to the benzodiazepine receptor, the benzodiazepine ligand locks the benzodiazepine receptor into a conformation in which it has a greater affinity for the GABA neurotransmitter. This increases the frequency of the opening of the associated chloride ion channel and hyperpolarizes the membrane of the associated neuron.
During the early phase of the COVID-19 pandemic, Duterte downplayed the severity of the outbreak and urged the public to avoid anti-Chinese sentiment. In a February 2020 press briefing, he assured citizens that "everything is well" and stated that the public should refrain from discriminating against Chinese nationals. The first reported COVID-19 case in the Philippines was on January 30, 2020, prompting Duterte to issue bans on the entry of Chinese nationals from China and calling for calm. His administration opted to use what it described as "draconian measures" to control the contagion, and Duterte employed the military and police to enforce the public's strict adherence to quarantine and health protocols. As countries were scrambling in securing COVID-19 vaccines for their own citizens, Duterte called for patience amid criticism. To expedite vaccine procurement, Duterte rejected creating a committee and designated Carlito Galvez Jr. as "vaccine czar", who had the gargantuan task of acquiring vaccines from other countries. == Target == Do6a primarily targets Pickpocket/Balboa (Ppk/Bba or Ppk1/Ppk26) ion channels that are evenly distributed on the dendrites of class IV dendritic arborizing (cIV da) neurons in the peripheral nervous system of fruit fly larvae. cIV da neurons are responsible specifically for nociception from mechanical stimuli and heat, unlike cI, cII cIII that respond to other sensory input, like proprioception or gentle touch. These neurons have highly complex dendritic trees and blocking their synaptic output significantly reduces behavioral nociceptive responses (e.g. rolling) in larvae. Do6a appears to target exclusively insect nociceptors, likely due to the parasitic reproduction cycle of the species requiring good protection against other insects. Other peptides in the venom (e.g. Do10a and Do13a) affect pain receptors in mammals. Expression of both Ppk and Bba forming a heteromeric channel complex in cIV da neurons are necessary for nociception from Do6a. Ppk/Bba belong to Degenerin/Epithelial (DEG/ENaC) protein family and respond specifically to mechanical nociception and not noxious heat. Gating of these channels is still not entirely understood. While their activation upon harsh mechanical pressure may suggest a mechanosensitive nature of these channels, peptides like Do6a and Vulnusin have been shown to activate Ppk1/Ppk26 without a presence of a mechanical stimulus, pointing towards ligand-gating instead.
=== Industrial solvents === Critics of seed oils often point to the health hazards of the solvents used in the industrial process of generating vegetable oils. Hexane, which can be neurotoxic, is extremely effective at oil extraction. Thus, it is often quoted as a danger when consuming vegetable oils as it can be found in finished oils in trace amounts. The United States Environmental Protection Agency studied the toxicity of hexane extensively in the 1980s. The studies found that the hexane used in industrial processes was safe for consumption and did not cause nerve damage.

While Aβ has been implicated in cancer development, prompting studies on a variety of cancers to elucidate the nature of its possible effects, results are largely inconclusive. == Fission-produced isotopes of caesium == The heavier isotopes have half-lives of seconds or minutes. Almost all caesium produced from nuclear fission comes from beta decay of originally more neutron-rich fission products, passing through isotopes of iodine then isotopes of xenon. Because these elements are volatile and can diffuse through nuclear fuel or air, caesium (thus its higher-Z decay products) is often created far from the original site of fission.
